Lunch Review: Mr. Dunderbak's

Venture into a small-scale version of Munich's famous biergarten, the Hofbraehaus, located inside University mall between Sears and Macy's. Since 1974, Mr. Dunderbaks has served as Tampa's true German American biergarten, marketplace and restaurant.  Dunderbaks has proved to be a hangout over the years, especially for USF students and faculty, because of its location near USF's Tampa campus, as well as the diverse collection of beer, food and more at reasonable prices and weekly happy hour specials. Mr. Dunderbaks presents over 26 draft and traditional English-style cask beers and more than 300 bottled microbrews and imports from all over the world. The bar also serves rotating selections of rare beers, as well as German wines.

It wouldn't be a real biergarten if it didn't offer some typical German grub. Dunderbaks features a huge menu, from appetizers like pretzels and potato pancakes to Landjager (pork and beef jerky), or soups and salads to Schnitzels. Try one of the Haus Classic Sandwiches on a variety of breads including imported German hard rye, a selection of cheeses like Havarti, and fresh meats such as corned beef, Liverwurst, Pastrami, Westphalian smoked ham, Leberkase, German bologna, Schnkenspek, Lachsschinkin, Jadgwurst, Proscuitto ham and more.  Or choose a German-style hotdog from the variety of sausages such as Bavarian Bratwurst, smoked Bauernwurst, Polish Kielbasa, Wienerwurst, German Knackwurst, Weisswurst, Andouille, Debrizener, Weisswurst. If you are up early, breakfast is also an option with choices like an omelette or a bagel with the creamy, chocolate-hazelnut European favorite: Nutella.  Germans aren't only famous for beer and brats. Don't forget to try a homemade dessert like black forest cake, carrot cake, apple strudel and more.
