Ever wonder who that face behind the music is? We did to. That's why we've set out to uncover the mystery of the Disc Jockey's that you dance to nightly. This week we've caught:
DJ Teresa
From: St. Petersburg, FL
What is the significance of your name?
So many people put up a façade….I just wanted to be real and share music with the world, so I used my own name. I have not met very many other Teresa’s in the world and I tend to be fairly memorable so I didn’t feel the need to include a last name.
How did you get it?
It’s my first name
What kind of music do you like to play the most?
Lately I’m REALLY in love with Tech House. I love all variations of house, particularly Latin or minimal influenced.
What made you interesting in DJ-ing?
I have always been either a musician or devoted fan of all genres of music. DJing is a natural progression from musician to conductor. As a DJ, there are so many elements available at the controls; you truly have the capacity of a full orchestra conductor at your command.
How long have you been a DJ?
A little over three years.
Where are your favorite venues to spin at?
Es Paradis (Ibiza), The Orange Corner (Ibiza), Viva (Ibiza), Eden Rooms (Ibiza), Jackson’s (Tampa, FL), Hotel Leon (South Miami Beach, FL)
Outside of work, do you ever go out to clubs?
Yes, I try to get out as much as possible to support the local talent and music scene.
Do you take music requests?
If we are in this business, it is because we like to please, so yes, I try to, as long as it’s not that same annoying chick that seems to show up on a regular basis, who is very sure that the entire room wants to hear hip hop or god forbid the Electric Slide RIGHT NOW……come on djs you know the one I’m talking about…….its the same type of person but a different one every time. Please keep them from coming INTO the dj booth to tell me what to play next, if you don’t mind.
When I play a club, I go to great lengths to familiarize myself with the audience and their preferences before I plan my set. Like any musician or artist, I practice. My best sets are always the ones I have planned and practiced. Because I research what the audience wants before planning my sets, my sets are as adaptable as anyone who always fly’s by the seat of their pants. But within reason. I am a House DJ and a club DJ that works excruciatingly hard to build sets with long fluid blends that are worthy of the best clubs in the world. Not a special event or wedding dj that spits out what ever track someone wants on a whim. My goal as an artist is to share new, ear opening music with the world. To somehow leave this world a more musical magical place than I found it. When I perform, it is an artistic expression regardless of delivery method.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen while you were working?
I think I have to go with boobies. Gotta love the boobies. I have dj’d at a nudist resort watching a bunch of middle aged naked bikers bounce around in waist deep foam to my groove and I have also looked out over a beach full of naked boobies just before sunset while I was djing in Ibiza. Still shocks me. Oh my, I love my job.
What’s been your biggest gig so far?
Mega club Es Paradis, Ibiza Spain May 19, 2009; locally the launch of the Florida Female House DJ Showcase at Jackson’s on May 30, 2009.
When you are up there, do you have a playlist or do you read the crowd?
I do both. I research my audience before I plan my set, but I also have the adaptability to go elsewhere if the crowd requires.
Best DJ experience?
Es Paradis, The Orange Corner (Ibiza); Jackson’s (Tampa FL)
Do you prefer playing at clubs or bigger events?
I tend to prefer clubs to outdoor events.
With so much music now a days have you gone to Serato or do you still carry the old fashion milk crates?
I carry a cd case and spin with cds. No laptop.
What DJs do you look up to?
Dubfire and Sharam from Deep Dish, Sebastien Leger, David Guetta, Eric Prydz, Nic Fanciulli, John Aquaviva, Loco Dice
What’s the 1 song that you can also play that will make everyone dance?
Sun Is Shining – Funkerman Remix, EVERYONE knows and loves Bob Marley and this is a fantastic remix.
If there is one song that describes you, which one would it be?
My mind is a total blank and I just can’t possibly think of one that could describe me. I seek out new music constantly, so what I love at the moment evolves constantly.
Are you associated with or are you part of any groups in the music industry?
I’m released on two different global labels and work remotely with several other producers from around the world.
Would you or do you work with any radio station in the Tampa Bay area?
I do not currently work with any radio stations but would welcome the opportunity.
What are your future plans?
I have four completed original tracks that I plan to release as full remix package EP over the next year, I see myself back in Ibiza and I have big plans for Winter Music Conference 2010.
