What is the significance of your name? “SPEEDY is not only fast it also means intensity, that’s how I’m coming at you son!!!”

 

How did you get it? “My dad is a local DJ here in Tampa also, his nickname since high school was and is speedy, so when I used to go DJ with him, no matter what crazy name I tried to use, people just called me speedy jr so I gave up and stuck with it plus I’m keeping the family tradition of music going”

 

What kind of music do you like to play the most? “Latin music, hip hop, love it when I can throw in an old school set of anything even freestyle, I actually like to play house and techno too just don’t keep up with the music enough and became too popular for reggaeton and Latin music now so I hardly ever get a chance to play it”

 

What made you interesting in DJ-ing? “Always loved music since really young, I used to record the DJ’s mixing live on the radio all the time!!!! My Dad used to be a Latin music musician before we moved to Florida so he noticed that I loved the DJing part so he took it on himself to give me a hobby to keep me out of trouble. He started DJing locally so he had the equipment around, I started playing with it and going with him to DJ parties and that was it I was hooked”

How long have you been a DJ? “15 years”

 

Where are your favorite venues to spin at? “Love Mirage, especially on Friday’s I can pretty much play anything and get away with it… At Skye Night Club the crowd participation is the best, they sing the songs back the loudest and when the song says put your hands up their hands are up without any more coaxing!”

 

Outside of work, do you ever go out to clubs? “Once in a while, not much anymore married life does that!”

 

Do you take music requests? “Depends on if I really want to play it, its reasonable, and it works into the set I’m doing at the time if not they have to wait! A tip can speed it up!”

 

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen while you were working? “There’s too much craziness that I have seen to fit here!”

 

What’s been your biggest gig so far?  “Radio station concerts have been the biggest, playing in front of 20,000 plus people”

 

When you are up there, do you have a playlist or do you read the crowd? “The playlist is usually in my head, I change it according to the crowd reactions”

 

Best DJ experience? “The first radio station concert I played at, when I introduced myself the crowd actually applauded me it made me feel appreciated”

 

 Do you prefer playing at clubs or bigger events? “I have no real preference I like them both."

With so much music now a days have you gone to Serato or do you still carry the old fashion milk crates?  "Serato!!!! But you have to have some cds just in case."

 

 What DJs do you look up to? “Tony Touch, Funkmaster Flex, Tiesto, Rafy Mercenario, too many to list”

 

Are you associated with or are you part of any groups in the music industry? “Shadyville DJ’s which is Eminem’s and G Unit’s DJ crew”

 

Would you or do you work with any radio station in the Tampa Bay area?  “I work for WYUU 92.5 Maxima FM (www.925maxima.com) occasionally also work at events for sister station WLLD Wild 98.7 FM”

 

What are your future plans?  “I’m trying to take myself as far as I can go, it’s been great and I’m looking forward to doing bigger things”
