Off the beaten path of Main Street in downtown Dunedin is a hole-in-the-wall bar with more than 30 beers on tap. This new bar, though short on charm, is a beer-lover’s dream. What the Dunedin House of Beer lacks in sophistication it certainly makes up for in product selection.

The scene: This bar is so small that it would be easy to walk or drive right by it if you weren’t looking for it. Out front, there are two small tables for sidewalk drinking. Inside, it’s dimly lit and nearly always standing-room only. The clientele are a mix of ages from early 20s to late 50s, but that’s really typical of most everywhere in Dunedin. Down a long hallway, past the beer coolers and through a big door, there is a small patio area with a few more tables.

The beer: Dunedin House of Beer didn’t waste much time or money on things like décor or pool tables, and that’s probably because they wanted the beer to stand out as the main attraction at this little bar. And stand out it does: on a huge chalkboard right above the bar. When you first glance at the list, you are likely to be quite overwhelmed by the long list of brews. Feel free to take your time ordering, and if you don’t know where to begin, just tell your bartender what you like and they can recommend something for you. For example, like your beer so sweet it tastes like soda? Give the raspberry-kissed St. Louis Frambois a try. Looking for something a little darker, perhaps a classic ale with hints of caramel, toffee, nuts, and spice? Then the Ipswich Original Ale is for you. Looking for a light German pilsner that falls somewhere in between? Try the malty Radeburger. The point is, whatever your taste buds desire, the House of Beer is sure to have something that can quench your thirst.

The damage: Most beers on the list are a bit fancier than Bud Light, so they cost a little more, too. Most brews start around $5, with the average beer costing around $6.

Insider tip: Dunedin is notoriously dog-friendly, and the House of Beer is no exception. Your furry best friends are welcome to sit with you either out front or on the patio out back.

The bottom line: The House of Beer is the perfect venue if you want to stop somewhere for a few beers and have a conversation with friends. But if you’re looking to dance the night away or meet some young hotties, you definitely want to look elsewhere.
