MacDinton’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, located on Howard just south of Swann, is the spot for young twenty/thirty-somethings looking to whoop it up and sink. Or swim. Right next to the valet stand there is a big ol’ sign for Zingo (Too drunk to drive? Call Zingo and they’ll pop a scooter in your trunk, drive you home in your car, then zip away to rescue another victim of over-imbibing). Or, take advantage of the wall mounted breathalyzer before you get behind the wheel. These are two necessary and popular implements on Fridays, when a $10 wristband gets you all the drinks your blood stream can tolerate. Other drink specials are offered throughout the week – but none quite so gluttonous.
Drinks: There is a full bar with pub favorites on tap and as mentioned before, daily drink specials.
Decor: There are two bars outside and a covered patio with lots of space for mingling, flirting and/or stumbling. Inside, the bar is immediately to your left with a small stage and two smaller rooms to the right. All tables are pub height – not the most friendly for patrons in wheelchairs or similar, but then again, that’s probably not the demographic they’re aiming for.
Crowd: This location is just begging for young professionals looking to party. It may be intimidating to those who aren’t well heeled, well dressed, attractive and rolling in a car that cost less than $30k. If you’re looking for less of a party vibe and more of a true pub experience, stop by on Sunday afternoons and hang with fans of English Premier League soccer – MacDinton’s boasts that their spot is one of the only places to host viewing parties in Tampa.
Service: The staff is friendly and ready to serve any mixed drink you can think of. They do a find job of keeping drinks in hand.
Sounds: Karaoke and live bands grace the stage. Check their website for details.
Food: Bar food (sandwiches, nachos, wings) and traditional Irish pub fare (Bangers and Mash, Shepherd’s Pie) are up for grabs – not necessarily outstanding, but good enough to keep all that liquor from sloshing around in your stomach.
Bottom line: Go there to drink – the more the better. Take advantage of the general vibe of debauchery – everyone else is doing it!
The damage: Four drinks and an appetizer during happy hour tallied up to about $22 before tip.
Dress code: Overpriced- labels visible a plus.
