You loved the movie, what about the DVD?
Find out as we examine the extras on this week's best movie DVDs...
“I LOVE YOU, MAN”
Stars: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones
Director: John Hamburg (“Along Came Polly”)
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "Consistently hilarious. Rudd and Segel [are] an ideal comic pair."
Extras: DVD: Commentary by Rudd, Segel and Hamburg; “The Making of ‘I Love You, Man” featurette; outtakes, deleted scenes, extended scenes and a gag reel.
Blu-ray: DVD extras plus the red band trailer.
Worth watching: The commentary, deleted and extended scenes, and outtakes, so you can see more of the soon-to-be legendary comedy team of Rudd and Segel getting their start.
Worth skipping: “The Making of” featurette. It’s actually worth watching, but unlike the other extras, it’s only worth watching once.
Worth adding: A second commentary with Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart—a.k.a. the guys in Rush—who memorably cameo in the film.
Buy, rent or ignore: Buy.
“17 AGAIN”
Stars: Zac Efron, Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann
Director: Burr Steers (“Igby Goes Down”)
Formats: DVD, DVD/Blu-ray Combo
What we said: "Forget being too old—Zac Efron is just too good for this."
Extras: DVD: Both the Widescreen and Pan & Scan versions of the movie.
DVD/Blu-ray Combo: A Blu-ray, a DVD and a digital copy of the movie; outtakes; deleted scenes; “Zac’s Dance Flashback”; “Zac Goes Back” and “Going Back to 17” featurettes; “Way Cool Tell All Trivia Track.”
Worth watching: The trivia track is informative without being intrusive.
Worth skipping: Anything with “Zac” in the name. Yeah, Efron’s the star and all, but it seems rude to marginalize his co-stars like that.
Worth adding: A commentary with Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia and their “Big” director Penny Marshall, remembering their classic and discussing the influence (good and bad) on this movie.
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent the DVD/Blu-ray combo; Ignore the DVD.
“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: 25TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION”
Stars: Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael
Director: Steve Barron “(Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”), Michael Pressman (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze”), Stuart Gillard (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time”), Kevin Munroe (“TMNT”)
Formats: DVD, Blu-ray
What we say: For heroes in a half-shell fans this box set, which includes the Blu-ray debut of the first three live action movies, is like a fresh pizza.
Extras: DVD: Collectible pizza box packaging; stickers; masks.
Blu-ray: The pizza box plus a reproduction of the “TMNT: The Movie” comic book; an original autographed sketch by “Turtles” co-creator Peter Laird; collectible character cards; knit cap.
Worth watching: The knit cap. Nothing attracts the opposite sex like the confidence it takes to wear a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hat in public.
Worth skipping: The comic book. Seems redundant alongside the movie.
Worth adding: A copy of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary: A Quarter Century Celebration,” in which co-creator Kevin Eastman picks his favorite “Turtles” tales.
Buy, rent or ignore: Buy the Blu-ray for the collectibles and the live action movies in HD; Ignore the DVD (unless you really, really like stickers).
