Al Pacino as Michael Corleone, “The Godfather Part II”

For the better part of three hours, we try to gauge just how deep Michael’s dark side goes. He’s the introverted gangster, whose calm façade all but masks a truly despicable inner nature. He screams when his family’s home is attacked one night, but methodically travels from one potential enemy to another, coolly lying to their faces so he can gain insight from their reactions. When he banishes his brother from his life, he almost does it in a whisper. Between the first and second “Godfather” movies, we watch Michael evolve from the idealistic baby of the family to its morose patriarch, his smile vanishing as the death toll ticks higher.
