The buzz: The Canadian duo comprised of MC Isis and producer Grahm Zilla has gotten worldwide dancefloor play with the singles “Jerk It,” “Bubblegum,” and “Sweet 16,” which blend sonic sensibilities from rave-era, synth-heavy techno, fast and bootylicious Baltimore club music, and lecherous Dirty South rap.

The verdict: “Thunderheist” feels like a collection of unfinished singles rather than a cohesive album, with no overall meaning beyond getting introxicated in the club. “Jerk It” and “Bubblegum” are simple and effective, but songs like “Freddie” (about a coke addict) and “Space Cowboy” (clocking in at an almost irrelevant seven minutes) might sound better and be funnier while high. As for sober listening outside the party, they and several others fall flat.

Did you know? Isis and Grahm Zilla didn’t meet each other at a party under a disco ball, but they did meet on MySpace.
