Madonna seemed like an overnight sensation with the success of her self-titled debut album, which came out in 1983 and featured the hits "Holiday," "Borderline," and "Lucky Star." But after moving to New York City from her hometown of Detroit in 1977, Madonna Louise Ciccone paid her dues. She worked for several years as a semi-professional dancer, started her first band (the Breakfast Club—she played drums, believe it or not) in 1979, and held down a series of low-paying jobs—including a stint at Dunkin' Donuts.
