Madonna met actor Sean Penn in 1985 and married him later that year. They immediately become one of Hollywood's hottest couples, and a favorite target of celebrity gossip mags and supermarket tabloids—the more so because Penn had a reputation for having a bad temper and attacking paparazzi. The marriage was rocky from the start, and at one point, Madonna pressed charges against Penn for domestic assault. They finally divorced in 1989.
