Initially opening on Columbus Drive in 1986, and then relocating to its current address in 1995 after being destoyed by a fire, El Gallo de Oro now sits at the front of the neighborhood landmark, Fiesta Plaza. The restauraunt typifies the true spirit of old West Tampa: a social gathering place from morning through mid-day, where locals can sit, socialize and sip on one of the best cups of cafe con leche in the bay area. At only $1.75 for a medium cup of it, and a food menu reflecting similar low prices, the bang for your buck cannot be beat here.
Stop in for take-out or stay and enjoy typical Cuban comfort foods packed with flavor, from palomilla steak and flan to cuban toast with butter, or cuban sanwiches and "medianoches" to black beans and rice, and watch old friends as they play cards or dominos and tell jokes and stories about their heritage and the "old days" in Tampa.
