If you’re in search of a hearty meal with a friendly, neighborhood vibe, CBD’s Southside is the place to go. This eatery (south of Kennedy on Westshore), plates up gigantic grinders, pizzas and large-portioned meat and pasta dishes. The weekday drink and dining specials are a couple more reasons to stop in for a gut busting meal.
The digs: There is a bar and a cozy dining room on the first floor and an “adults only” bar on the second floor (nothing kinky, just free of garden variety rug rats). Interested in a dinner party? CDB’s is a happy to host you in one of their private rooms.
The grub: You’ll find standard Italian fare on the menu: antipasti, salads, pizzas, grinders, and pastas as well as chicken, seafood and meat dishes. For the full experience, share the Sicilian Sampler ($12.99): fried green tomatoes, mozzarella sticks, clams casino, fried ravioli and stuffed mushrooms or the Antipasto Salad ($9.99 small/$16.99 large): a bed of mixed salad greens, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, pickled vegetables, and pinwheels of salami, capicola and mortadella topped with Fontinella cheese.
But save room for the next round – try an oven grinder. The Hard Hat Special ($7.99 grande/$9.99 colosso), dubbed “The Ultimate Grinder” is Genoa salami, ham, roast beef, pastrami and pepperoni served with lettuce, tomato, mayo and provolone cheese. The Meat Lover’s Special ($14.99 small/$19.99 medium/$23.99 large) pizza could be renamed “pizza-masquerading-as-a-heart-attack”. Piled high with pepperoni, ham, bacon, meatball and sausage, you may just feel your arteries clogging with every bite, but it’s so delicious you will easily forget.
Trying to stick to a diet while your friends are pigging out on some pizza isn’t too hard either. The Grilled Chicken Breast ($14.99) is served with roasted potatoes, a vegetable medley, a salad and warm bread with garlic butter. And during the week, it is part of the $9.99 dinner special. Enjoy this dish with a couple of glasses of fresh Sangria (2 for 1 during happy hour) and you won’t feel left out of the gluttony surrounding you.
The bottom line: CDB’s is a great neighborhood hangout – a Tampa staple. Next time you’re driving by, stop in and take advantage of the generous portions and more than agreeable happy hour/dinner specials.
