A Tampa girl born and raised, I can’t tell you the countless times I’ve driven past the spot that Bin 27 now inhabits, formerly Café Con Trey, thinking, “Are they ever open?  Or open at all?”  So when I was tapped to get a peek at one of the newer Tampa dining spots I was intrigued.

The digs:  Bin 27 is sleek and warm, not to mention cozy.  Upon entering there is a small but well stocked bar to the left and beyond that, a snug dining room lined with private booths and a few tables.  The lights are low and the music is mellow – definitely a date spot.  There is also a patio for outside dining – but it was chilly that night so I stayed inside.

The staff is attractive and (almost) too friendly, and though I hate to say it: the snob factor is high.  The restaurant’s proximity to the old money population of Tampa makes that fact unavoidable.  It’s a posh spot and most definitely targeted towards a demographic who can and want to pay the prices listed on the menu. “Fussy” might also be a good word – the sauces are drizzled, the portions are small and there are no condiments on the table – they’re sure it’s that good.  Luckily for them, it is.

The grub: The menu is brief but mouth-watering, offering the gamut of sophisticated entrees, salads and sandwiches.

Our server brought us a few crusty rolls with a yummy mojo infused butter for us to start along with a comprehensive wine list.  Though I don’t claim to be one, I’d venture to say that a connoisseur could appreciate the options.

In a nod to its trailer park cousin fried mozzarella, the fried goat cheese ($9.00) is an excellent starter – an elevated version of the aforementioned bar favorite.   Dredged in panko then plated with a spicy pomodoro and a spray of balsamic reduction, the two bite serving left me wanting more.  The goat cheese was particularly good – tart but creamy and not gamey at all.

For the main course, I chose the Grilled Heritage Pork chop ($22.50) – a chubby stump of grilled pork chop covered in apple butter chutney served with spinach dripping in garlic and buttery, decadent spaetzle.  My dinner companion chose the Seasonal Vegetable Risotto with Grilled Salmon ($20.00).  Though the risotto was creamy, it was a bit bland.  The salmon, on the other hand was cooked and seasoned well and quite enjoyable.

The cost:  This review is not a “cheap eats” review by any stretch of imagination – our appetizer and entrees, and non-alcoholic beverages totaled out to $58.85 so after tip, I forked out over $70.

The bottom line: Bin 27 is a good option for Tampa foodies in search of a new, upscale dining experience.  Though the prices may inhibit the general population from enjoying its spoils, this restaurant offers an elegant take on bistro dining.  If you’re wallet’s nice and padded – check it out.
