Best Bets: Belgian Waffles
You think you know all about Belgian waffles? Well, you might be surprised. Technically, the export from Belgium must be large, square, and made with a lighter batter and deeper square pockets than the imitators. Most are made with a yeast batter and fluffier than other varieties. They are considered sweet enough naturally that many aren't served with any topping at all, and are considered a snack, not breakfast. Who knew?
Clearly, America has added some powdered sugar, fruit, and chocolate to the recipe along the way because, hey, that's what we do. Whether made the traditional way or concocted as a creative U.S. hybrid, who doesn't love a good golden, delicious waffle? Not only did they bring us Stella Artois, they brought us the sweetest treat to hit brunch buffets since maple syrup. Thank you, Belgium.
