First Look: Crate and Barrel
May 21, 2009
"Crate and Barrel" got its name when the first store opened in Chicago in 1962, and the founders discovered they'd spent nearly all of their money on merchandise and had none left over to decorate their store. They decided to use the shipping crates and wooden barrels that their merchandise had arrived in to display the items.
Back then, the founders bought their merchandise direct from the companies that made the items, cutting out middlemen, and lowering prices. Managers at the new Tampa store say Crate and Barrel still keeps its prices low using the same technique.
And if the prices aren't low enough for you, the store will be holding a clearance sale just two weeks after it opens! Each January and June, every Crate and Barrel holds a clearance sale with seasonal items from around the country. It just so happens that the Tampa store is opening right before the sale that starts June 6th.
