Target audience: Anyone with a Y chromosome, particularly married (but not to her) Sterling Cooper partner, Roger Sterling.
Subliminal message: Despite the purring voice and undulating sashay, Joan’s brightly colored clothes and brassy red hair—kept short and always perfectly coiffed, no matter the hour or the bedfellow—indicate an independence that would make Betty Freidan proud.
Bottom line: Joan may seem all hourglass figure and form-fitting frocks, but this is one dame who can hold her own in a man’s world—and look good doing it.
