Ugly Betty review
Betty Suarez is back and uglier (read: more fabulous) than ever. Picking up three weeks after last season’s emotional and action-packed finale, fans are finally rewarded with answers to all of their pressing questions: Will Henry and Betty ever be together? Did Santos survive the shooting? When can we see Justin sing and dance again? And on the Meade front, will Wilhelmina really marry Bradford, or can escaped con matriarch Claire reclaim her family? Are Amanda and Daniel half brother and sister? And will Daniel ever sober up and take charge? Phew! So many questions, so little time, but luckily the first two episodes back tackle them all…and then some.

Who’s that?:
Illeana Douglas makes her “Betty” debut as Sheila, a new face in the Mode offices. Also, keep your eyes peeled for Vanessa Williams’ real-life ex Rick Fox who’ll be playing Dwayne, Wilhelmina’s new big-hunk-of-man-meat bodyguard. Later in the season, “Six Feet Under” alum Freddy Rodriguez will join the cast as Giovanni, a possible new love interest for Betty.

Buzzed about:
There’s rumor that one of the Meade siblings will be in a coma after that terrible crash…and that things might be very different if and when they wake up. There’s also been a little rumbling that Amanda has, um, grown as a person since discovering that Mode maven Fey Summers is her biological mother. And there’s a slew of other guest stars to look forward to, including Victoria Beckham, Marlo Thomas, James Van Der Beek, Betty White, Victor Garber and even a potential cameo by Simon Cowell.

The “ooh” factor: Just like the “Betty” we know and love, this season has plenty of moments that are sharp (Wilhelmina snapping at Betty: “Come on girl. I am black, you are Mexican, let’s not talk around it like a couple of dull while people.”), sweet (like when Betty learns the not-so-innocent meaning of “Afternoon Delight”) and full of sass (precocious nephew Justin becomes a Mode intern—yay!).

The “eh” factor:
Can we please drop the whole “my-illegal-immigrant-dad-is-stuck-in-Mexico” storyline? Bor-ing! Bring Ignacio back or write him out forever.

The verdict:
As Wilhelmina so expertly puts it, Betty’s “south of the border spirit” is still very much intact.

Season two of “Ugly Betty” premieres Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m./7c on ABC.
